VCA Runs Cricket Training on Santo and Malekula

Vanuatu Cricket has managed to visit and run development programs on Santo and Malekula with the proud sponsorship of Air Vanuatu and funding from the Australian Government through the Pacific Sports Partnership (PSP) program.

Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA) visited the two islands with the purpose of improving cricket development and equipping staff and teachers with the knowledge and skills to coach and run cricket activities in schools and communities.

February 21st to the 23rd, the VCA made its first visit to Santo this year which featured a cricket induction program at Aore Adventist Academy with almost 200 participants.

With the rapid growth of Cricket there, Santo development officer, Vari Lele said that running cricket induction programs are crucial to the growth of club cricket as it is their aim to improve club competitions and increase the number of playing clubs in Santo.

“Running the cricket induction program at Aore School was great because it gave us an opportunity to include high schools in our club competitions and it also gave schools the opportunity to participate in cricket,” said Lele.

McMillan Markia, VCA’s competitions, umpiring and scoring officer said that teaching the basics of cricket to teachers, children and the community is also vital to the growth of cricket and it is important that the VCA is taking time to visit and help teachers on other islands.

Markia facilitated level 0 refresher courses on Malekula from February 28th to March 2nd and Santo on the 6th and 7th of March which saw a large turnout and a huge success for the VCA and everyone involved.

The level 0 refresher courses covered the basics of cricket coaching, scoring, umpiring a game, how to facilitate a match and the laws of cricket.

“I am happy with the turnout from both Malekula and Santo and I believe that the teachers who participated will work hard to pave the way to a stronger future for cricket on their respective islands,” said Markia.

A total of 21 teachers (5 female, 16 male) participated in the level 0 course in Santo and 16 teachers (8 male, 8 female) participated in Malekula.

Vanuatu Cricket would like to acknowledge the support and funding from the Australian Government through PSP and the sponsorship from Air Vanuatu and the National Bank of Vanuatu towards these visits.
